NICK EGGENHOFER (D.)

(1897 - 1985)

Nick Eggenhofer, known as “The Dean of Western Illustrators”, was born in Bavaria in 1897. After immigrating to America in 1913, he began work as an illustrator of pulp magazines. He later moved to Cody, Wyoming where he continued his work with magazines and book illustrations, and eventually, his career as a fine artist.

Nick Eggenhofer is known for his seminal work on horse drawn vehicles from his book, “Wagons, Mules and Men”, as well as his illustrations ranging from the pulp magazines of the 1920-1940s through countless books and commissions.

In 1964, Nick was commissioned by the National Park Service to paint several historical paintings for Fort Union National Monument in New Mexico and Fort Davis in Texas. These paintings illustrated the importance of those forts to Western History.

Big Horn Galleries is proud to present works available for the first time from Nick’s personal collection, by descent of children to grandchildren. Many of these represent some of Nick’s finest works in varying media.
