"I am drawn to photography for its ability to capture reality and archive it as an artistic/historical document.  The people of the American West have a distinct relationship with the land.  Over the last several years I have become intrigued with visually exploring this relationship."

Four years ago Steve left the hustle of the big city life in Denver to live in Yellowstone country.  He makes his home in Cody, Wyoming.  Steve has spent the last 20 years working as a professional photographer.  His work has appeared in a number of publication such as:  Time magazine , U.S. News and World Report, Life magazine, ESPN Magazine, Sierra Magazine, Smithsonian magazine, New York Times magazine, MSNBC, GEO magazine, Readers Digest, ect.

His work has been recognized by some of the world's most prestigious contest.  With over 120 national and international awards including:  A Pulitzer Prize winner (nominated 3 times), Communication Arts, Pictures of the Year, The Best of Photojournalism, The Society of News Design, the World Sports Foundation, etc.

Smith's work has been shown in a wide variety of world class museums and institutions including:  The Smithsonian Institute, The International Professional Photography Hall of Fame, The Science Museum, South Kensington, London England, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, Setagaya Museum, Tokyo Japan, Durban Center for Photography, Durban, South Africa, The Royal Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia, Queensland College of Art, Brisbane, The Poynter Institute, The National Press Club, Hokkaido Photo Museum, Japan, etc.  Steve's work is also part of the "The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photographs" a traveling exhibition.

Steve has a graduate degree in Fine Arts from Ohio University and two Bachelors degrees from Washington University.  Steve grew up on a raspberry farm in Washington state.  His love and appreciation for the outdoors has always kept him coming back to the American West.
