Larry Pirnie

"I was born in Iowa in 1940 and lived on the Mississippi River most of my first 18 years. My earliest memory of making a picture was drawing the Lone Ranger when I was six years old. I've never stopped making pictures of cowboys and horses. My fantasy with the West was kept alive with a steady diet of Red Ryder comics, Charlie Russell calendar prints and Western Movies.

"I earned a BFA degree in 1963 at Pratt Institute in New York City. After 15 years of using my visual skills in a variety of work experiences, I moved to Montana to paint full time. My passion for the West had to be expressed. Montana has been my home for the past 18 years.

"The West is fantasy for me. The West inspires my play with color. The West is an endless opportunity for exploration. The West is a myth that has touched much of the world. The West represents endless adventures and freedom of movement. The West is where people come to be touched by magic. Color is how I express my relationship with that magic. The West is my home. The West is real."
